The
Greystone program at Schreiner University is the fruition of the efforts
many dedicated academy, education and military professionals. It is my
mission as Director to make your task of finding the best prep school as
straightforward and simple as possible. Here are some relevant facts
about Greystone at Schreiner:
- The total Program cost (room, board, tuition, fees, taxes and
projected cost for books) is $29,798 before financial assistance.
- Schreiner provides all Greystone students with a $4,700 merit
scholarship.
- “Board” refers to the 19 meals per week plan – excellent food, by
the way.
- There are flexible payment plans available – see
Admissions section.
- Greystone students qualify for all Federal/State/Local loan and
grant programs.
- Both merit and need-based scholarships apply 100% to the Greystone
program – contact Schreiner Admissions for details.
- The priority deadline for application submission to Schreiner is 01
May, the fall back deadline is 01 August and students start class in
mid-August.
- Schreiner/Greystone students pay for their own books (your choice -
new or used – and can sell back).
- Students must have accident
and health care insurance.
- Students can purchase quality health care insurance thru Schreiner
or can remain with a qualifying family accident and health plan.
- Greystone students have complete access to all Schreiner facilities,
programs, technology, clubs and organizations.
- All Greystone students live in L.A. Schreiner Residence Hall.
- Oversight is provided by highly qualified live-in Residence
Assistant.
- The Greystone offices are located in the Residence Hall.
- Campus is patrolled by trained Schreiner security force 24/7.
- Schreiner provides a doctor to oversee student health issues and
make referrals to off-campus clinics if required. Kerrville has
excellent doctors and medical facilities.
- Greystone is not a “military” institution. Students are not required
to wear military-style uniforms or to drill. Our objective is to
minimize distractions and maximize the students' focus on academic
studies and physical fitness - they will learn close order drill and
other military educational specialties when they get to the academy.
- The Greystone Character Development program is based directly on the
academies' own Leadership and Ethics courses as well as on the academy
Honor programs. The purpose is to thoroughly inculcate the concepts of
honor, integrity, trust, courage, commitment, truth, responsibility and
accountability in each student prior to their arrival at the academy. As
a Naval Academy Honor Mentor, I witnessed first-hand how important
character is to the ultimate success of each military academy student.
- The Academic Survival Skills program is taken directly from programs
offered at all the academies through their student center. Mastering the
basic academic learning skills will enable students to maximize their
Greystone experience.
- Time management skills are critical for a leader training to be
responsible for others. Effective planning and scheduling are the
mark of every successful academy student.
- Greystone students are required to participate in the Schreiner
athletic program – just as they will at the academies.
- Students participate in a personalized physical fitness program
Monday thru Saturday mornings at 0600 with the Director.
- Students participate in the varsity/JV (with the consent of the
Director – based upon academic achievement prior to arrival and GPA
after arrival) or intramural sports program after class to stimulate
the competitive spirit necessary to become an effective leader and
team player.
- Raising the bar of excellence is a significant goal at Greystone. It
applies to every part of the Greystone program – be it academics,
athletics, extra-curricular activities or individual maturity.
- Living on a college campus provides the right motivation to inspire
students to excel – a requirement to attain that appointment.
- The campus community is a more “mature” environment and will
encourage students to grow as an adult.
- The campus community is more focused on “career” ambitions and the
achievement of their personal goals.
- As a former prep school student myself, I understand what these
students are experiencing mentally, emotionally and physically after
being turned down. I can relate completely, and have created a program
that will re-inspire their ambition.
- As an academy grad, career military officer and academy faculty
member, I know what is expected of them from the academy perspective.
Greystone is designed to assist each student as they strive to achieve
the level of excellence expected by the academies.
That's the “quick and dirty” analysis of Greystone. Should you have any
specific questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at 830-896-6530
or 888-561-6924.
The program was developed with close attention to your perspective as a
parent in search of the complete academy preparatory education solution.
Our efforts are focused on two objectives: to make this daunting task of
reapplication more organized for parents and students, and to create an
updated and structured approach to academy preparatory education. My
personal motivation to get involved in academy preparatory education was
inspired out of my deep concern for the young men and women who desire
to serve this country as academy trained and educated leaders. I
strongly feel academy prep programs should support and motivate these
very qualified students to stay the course in pursuit of their
ambitions. It is the Greystone philosophy that we will work to keep up
with the academic, physical and ethical expectations of the academies
and strive to maximize candidate competitiveness for the students who
are re-applying. As an academy preparatory school, Greystone “raises the
bar” to a significantly higher standard of excellence.
Based upon research of existing prep school programs and numerous
conversations with academy faculty, staff, alumni, parents, cadets and
midshipmen, I am certain that Greystone offers the best mix of
specialized college-level academics, athletic competition, physical
fitness, leadership and character development to provide the highest
level of academy preparatory education. The structure, organization and
oversight provided by Greystone ensures that students remain focused on
their mission – to earn their academy appointment. Since no program can
offer a guarantee of an appointment, Greystone is designed to ensure
that each candidate has a safety net in place. By completing their
freshman year of college, should they not earn their appointment, they
will not have wasted their time or investment because they will have
completed their freshman year of college. Completing a year of the
Greystone program at Schreiner University provides students with 3
important options: they can choose to remain at Greystone for another
year as a sophomore and reapply to the academies, they can become a
Schreiner sophomore and pursue their appointment independent of
Greystone or they can transfer their credits to another college or
university and continue their education as a sophomore. It is not just a
safety net – it is all about expanded options to maximize opportunities.
Greystone delivers exactly what we promise:
- a specialized curriculum for academy-bound students
- courses matched to student academic ability
- a customized athletic program
- unique emphasis on character development and leadership training
- mastering time management skills
- high quality freshman year courses that are in-sync with academy
first-year courses
- ability to earn up to 36 college credits
- a valid academy back-up plan
- the necessary skills to validate or retake courses upon arrival at the academy
- the growth and maturity that derives from a college-level experience
Greystone is your family's best opportunity to maximize the return on
your academy preparatory school investment. You may have concerns about
Greystone being a new academy preparatory institution. Let me assure you
that, in this case, new does not mean untested or unproven. Schreiner
University has been providing students with high quality education since
1923. Through our close affiliation, Schreiner provides the academic
expertise required to support the core curriculum for the Greystone
program.
The University also provides Greystone with all facilities needed to
sustain campus activities including academic support (classrooms, labs,
library, lecture halls, etc.), housing, food service, athletic support
(fields, courts, equipment, etc.), administrative support and
infrastructure. As a prep school student, academy grad, career military
officer and academy faculty member, I have spent much of my life
instructing, inspiring and motivating young men and women in military
service to be more than they are. Whether my career took me aboard a
ship or to the academy, I have been engaged in the education of young
people. My experience as a senior officer (organization, administration,
management, training, education and leadership) has prepared me to
assume the responsibilities as Director of Greystone. Greystone is a new
institution; however, because of the close relationship with Schreiner
University , Greystone is an extremely stable program. Schreiner's
proven record of success when combined with the Greystone program
enables Schreiner to now state that it has sent more students to the
academies than any other university in the country.
Greystone was created with the help and assistance from supportive
academy faculty, staff, alumni, parents and students who agree that
academy preparatory education must be improved. Essentially, Greystone
was created by academy graduates and supporters expressly for potential
academy graduates. The Greystone program is a “total” academy prep
program that exceeds the academy expectations for reapplicants as well
as the needs of the individual student.
At Greystone, our past and your future start now.
